The present study introduces a composite index assessing quality of life and points out the problems that may arise when implementing social indicators on a regional scale. The study was carried out in 13 Greek regions using statistical data at the NUTS 2 administrative level for 2003 or 2004. Through the implementation of an integrated methodology and the comparison of the results with previous studies, the importance of composite indicators to describe complex social phenomena and to support specific developmental policies in disadvantaged regions was acknowledged.
